Hibernia:
Deadline for Mitchell Scholarship Applications

By Irish America Staff
October / November 2000

October 1, 2000 by Leave a Comment

The contest for the second annual George J. Mitchell Scholarships for the 2001-2002 academic year is underway. The deadline for applications is October 10, 2000. Twelve scholarships will be awarded.

The Mitchell scholarship program was initiated by the Washington-based U.S.-Ireland Alliance in 1998 in honor of Senator George Mitchell’s contribution to the peace process in Northern Ireland. The program offers a year of study at an institution of higher learning in Ireland or Northern Ireland.

“The scholarships will be instrumental in forging ties between future leaders in the United States and the island of Ireland,” maintains U.S.-Ireland Alliance president Trina Vargo.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens who are college graduates between the ages of 18 and 30. They must demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential. There is no restriction on the field of study as long as it is one available at an educational institution in Ireland or Northern Ireland.

The Mitchell scholarships are supported by an endowment established by the Irish government. Additional funding is provided by the British government, Bombardier Aerospace, Cross Atlantic Capital Partners, Mutual of America, Verner Lipfert Bernhard McPherson and Hand, and by a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

Applications containing the required documentation and references must be postmarked by October 10. ♦
