Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition, Margie McHugh has build a coalition of more than 150 immigrant rights group to promote action at the local, state and federal levels on a wide range of immigration law, social service and education policy issues. This has led to new resources for legal aid to immigrants, literacy classes for adults, the expansion of New York State’s emergency food program, and improved quality of education for New York’s immigrant students. Now her, and the coalition’s work, has been noticed. The Ford Foundation, in partnership with theWashington-based Advocacy Institute and the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at NYU, has selected McHugh as one of the winners of its Leadership for a Changing World awards program. Chosen from more than 3,000 nominees, McHugh and 19 other individuals or leadership teams that are getting results across the U.S. will receive $100,000 to continue their work, with an additional $30,000 over the next two years. ♦
