Maryland governor Martin O’Malley announced late December that he would commute the execution sentence of the last four death row inmates in the state.
O’Malley, a Democrat who is wrapping up his second term in office and is considered a frontrunner for the 2016 presidential elections (if he runs), said, “in my judgment,
leaving these death sentences in place does not serve the public good of the people of Maryland – present or future.”
O’Malley’s decision comes after the state legislature voted to repeal the death penalty in 2013, which was later signed into law by O’Malley.
