North Shore LIJ’s Michael Dowling Named 2015 Irish America Healthcare and Life Sciences 50 Keynote Speaker

On Wednesday, October 7th, Irish America magazine will celebrate the Irish America Healthcare and Life Sciences 50 honorees at the New York Yacht Club in Manhattan with Michael Dowling as the Keynote Speaker.

The reception will be co-hosted by ICON plc, one of the leading clinical research companies in the world, headquartered in Dublin.

Michael Dowling is the President and CEO of the North Shore LIJ Health System. He began his career as a faculty member at Fordham University as a professor of social policy and the assistant dean at the Graduate School of Social Services. In 1983, under Governor Mario Cuomo, he served as deputy secretary and state director of Health Education and Human Services.

When Cuomo left office in 1995, Dowling signed on as senior vice president at Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield, later taking up the post of SVP of hospital services at the North Shore LIJ Health System. He became executive vice president and chief operating officer in 1997, and was named president and CEO in 2002.

Born and raised in Knockaderry, Co. Limerick, Dowling is the eldest of five children. He had to help support his family from an early age, inspiring him to push further and achieve his dreams.

“No” was never an option for him, he told Irish America. “If you tell me I can’t do something, that’s when I become determined to get it done.”

This very Irish mindset propelled him to success, becoming the first person in his family to attend college, graduating University College Cork while working odd jobs to pay for tuition. After graduation he went to New York and earned a master’s degree from Fordham University.

The award recognizes the work of Irish-American and Irish-born medical professionals who are contributing everyday to the health and wellness of our communities, from pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and biotechnology to research and development, disease prevention, and life sciences venture capital. The honorees are profiled in the August/September issue of Irish America magazine.

Among the other honorees to be featured in the upcoming issue are Garret FitzGerald, director of the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics at the University of Pennsylvania and last year’s Health Care and Life Sciences 50 keynote speaker; Dr. Peter F. Buckley is dean of the Medical College of Georgia; Dr. BJ Casey, Sackler Professor of Developmental Psychobiology and Director of the Sacker Institute at Weill Cornell Medical College; Patrick Johnston, president and vice chancellor of Queens University Belfast; Susan Mahony, senior vice president at Eli Lilly and Company and President of Lilly Oncology; Ruth Riddick, founder of Sobriety Together and a pioneer in addiction treatment; and Nobel laureate Dr. James Watson, who discovered the double helix structure of DNA. ♦
