Irish America is pleased to announce that Daniel O’Day, chief executive officer of Roche Pharmaceuticals will deliver the keynote address at our 2017 Irish America Healthcare and Life Sciences 50 Awards dinner. The dinner, co-hosted with Dublin-based ICON plc, one of the world’s leading clinical research companies, will take place September 6 at the New York Yacht Club.

Irish America’s annual Healthcare and Life Sciences 50 list honors top Irish and Irish American doctors, clinical researchers, pharmaceutical leaders, and medical professionals, and highlights the work they are doing to improve the lives of their communities and our healthcare industry.

Daniel O’Day was born in Texas and is a third-generation Irish American with family from Ennis, County Clare on his father’s side. “The perseverance of my Irish ancestors is a daily motivation to me professionally and personally,” Daniel says. His first job was performing the “hard physical labor” of landscaping, which, he says, “inspired me to pursue my education.” He attended Georgetown University and Columbia University, receiving a B.S. in biology and an M.B.A.

He was appointed to his current responsibilities in 2012 having previously been the head of the diagnostics division of Roche since 2010. After joining the company in 1987 as part of Roche’s U.S. commercial and sales team, Daniel moved to Switzerland where he held roles in global marketing and lifecycle management. He has subsequently been head of corporate planning in Japan, general manager in Denmark, and president of Roche Molecular Diagnostics in California.

Roche Pharmaceuticals is the world’s leading biotech company, headquartered in Basel, Switzerland and with offices in more than 150 countries, including Ireland.

Past honorees have included Michael Dowling, CEO and president of Northwell Health; Dr. Garret A. FitzGerald, chair of the Department of Pharmacology and director of the Institute for Translational Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania; Sean Hogan, vice president and industry general manager of IBM Global Healthcare; Sister Carol Keehan, president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association of the United States; Deborah Kilpatrick, CEO of Evidation Health; Terry Mcguire, co-founder of Polaris Partners, one of the leading venture capitalist firms investing in technology and healthcare companies; Nobel Prize recipient Dr. James Watson; and 2016 keynote speaker Dr. Barbara Murphy, chair of the Department of Medicine at the Mount Sinai Health System, one of only three women to be appointed chair of medicine at a top medical school in the U.S.

The complete 2017 Irish America Healthcare and Life Sciences 50 list will be published in the August / September issue of Irish America, which will also feature a cover interview with O’Day. The previous Healthcare and Life Sciences 50 awards lists can be viewed here.
