Colloquium on the Good Friday Agreement and the Arts

April 16, 2024 by 1 Comment

Join Queen’s University Belfast and the American Irish Historical Society as they host a symposium on Post-Conflict Stage & Screen in Northern Ireland.

American Irish Historical Society, Tuesday, April 30, 2024, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

991 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10028

As Owen McCafferty’s dramatization of the last days of negotiations leading to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement runs at the Irish Arts Centre in New York, this one-day colloquium, organized by the Drama Department of Queen’s University Belfast, critically engages with the role played throughout the peace process by artists who have used theatre, film, and testimony to address the complex legacies of conflict that continue to haunt Northern Ireland today – more than a quarter-century after the Good Friday Agreement was signed.

Presentations will include panels on the following topics: Performing Peace; ‘The Troubles’ with Truth and Reconciliation; and Staging The Agreement.

Speakers include: playwright Owen McCafferty; Prof. Brian Singleton (Trinity College Dublin); Paula McFetridge (Kabosh Theatre); Prof. Anna Bryson (QUB); Dr Des O’Rawe (QUB); Dr Aoife Monks (Queen Mary)

The colloquium is free and open to all, the American Irish Historical Society asks anyone interested in attending to reserve a spot by email info@aihs.org. To see the full day’s schedule and to read the bios of the presenters, click here.
