Did you know that Ireland is the true Home of Halloween?
Halloween traces its roots back more than 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Fires were lit, feasts were shared, turnips were carved, and communities gathered to celebrate the changing season. As Irish people emigrated around the world, they carried these traditions with them, helping to inspire the modern Halloween celebrations enjoyed across the United States today like jack-o’-lanterns, apple bobbing, costumes, and trick-or-treating.
Ireland continues to honor these ancient customs through a vibrant program of festivals, events, storytelling, music, food and immersive experiences throughout the fall. Whether you’re looking to learn more about Halloween traditions, discover haunted tales, go on a ghost tour, or try seasonal recipes there’s plenty of things to do and experience on a trip to Ireland.
This year’s Home of Halloween program is anchored by the Púca Festival, the flagship celebration of Ireland’s Halloween heritage, alongside the world-renowned Derry Halloween. New highlights across the island include a spectacular outdoor Macnas production, The Cailleach, in Kilkenny; heritage-led storytelling experiences extending into Howth Castle in Fingal; the new Spooktacular Summoning, Samhain Trail and Athlone procession in Longford and Westmeath; and a new Samhain Banquet showcasing local food and traditions in Limerick.
Meanwhile, Derry Halloween marks its 40th anniversary with an expanded programme of celebrations, alongside exciting new year-round visitor experiences.
