Brendan Gleeson is turning into Hollywood's go-to-guy, at least when it comes to supporting characters. Gleeson's credits, in the last few years, are a tour through A-list Hollywood, from his role in Martin Scorsese's Irish warrior flick Gangs of New York to more recent turns in Troy and the creepy summer blockbuster The Village (directed by Sixth Sense creator M. Night … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood

When it comes to film festivals, the biggest news of the year has been Michael's Moore's big win of the Palme d'Or at Cannes for Fahrenheit 9/11, his controversial documentary on President George W. Bush Moore has always worn his Irish-American roots proudly on his sleeve, going so far as to say they played a role in his desire to question authority. A recent New Yorker … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood

Brendan Gleeson and Cillian Murphy ready themselves for some zombie slaughter in 28 Days Later. Look for Murphy to appear with Colin Farrell in Intermission and Gleeson shows opposite Nicole Kidman in Cold Mountain.

Now that Colin Farrell is a regular in both blockbuster movies and on the gossip pages, the search seems to be on for the next hot young Irish actor. Cillian Murphy certainly seems to be leading the pack at this point. But there's a young actress from Dublin also waiting in the wings, with a role in what is sure to be one of the biggest movies of 2005. The Irish-born Murphy … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood

A scene from the movie The Magdelene Sisters.

With the hype surrounding Gangs of New York (finally) dying down, Irish moviegoers can begin anticipating a fresh new crop of work by Irish actors and directors. Perhaps the most intriguing new project to look forward to -- Jim Sheridan's semi-autobiographical tale about Irish immigrants in New York -- is also one of the most frustrating. First of all, the film's name has … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood

Daniel McCarthy talks to Daniel Baldwin on the set of Irish Eyes.

Inspired by what he calls "credit card filmmakers" such as fellow Irish Americans Kevin Smith and Ed Burns, Daniel McCarthy ran up the bill on his pocket plastic to make his crime caper Irish Eyes, which will have its East Coast premiere in Boston on November 23. The saga begins in 1955 in the Irish stronghold of South Boston. On the docks, the influence of the Irish mob is … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood

Following the conclusion of negotiations between Irish government representatives and British government representatives, the British give the Irish a deadline to either accept of reject the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The treaty established the self-governing Irish Free State but still made Ireland a dominion under the British Crown. The treaty also gave the six counties of Northern Ireland, which had been acknowledged in the 1920 Government of Ireland Act, the option to opt out of the Irish Free State and remain part of England, which they opted for. The Anglo-Irish treaty split many and on this day in 1921 Prime Minister David LLoyd-George said that rejection by the Irish would result in “immediate and terrible war.”
