The artist Sarah Purser was born in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin on this day in 1848. She was raised in Dungarvan, County Waterford and educated in Switzerland. She went on to study at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin, and in Paris at the Académie Julian. Working primarily as a portrait artist, she also became associated with the stained glass movement. Purser opened a stained glass workshop in 1903, and some of her work was commissioned from as far away as New York City. Successful as she was in the arts, her wealth was accumulated primarily through investments. In 1923, she became the first woman to be made a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy.
