Esther is Now Following You By Tanya Sweeney Most of us will find the actions of this book’s protagonist pretty hard to understand. Sure, she has a crush on a Canadian actor whom she happened to pass in a London park at one stage. She then immerses herself in fan groups and online communities following (and reporting creepily on) his every move. But when she cleans out herself … [Read more...] about Review of Books

It’s been more than 30 years now since the trailblazing group Solas – with John Doyle on guitar – changed the way people around the world think about Irish music, along with legendary songwriter and performer Seamus Egan, fiddler Winifred Horan, vocalist Karan Casey, and accordionist John Williams, Doyle and Solas – meaning “light” in Irish – seamlessly blended Irish, folk, … [Read more...] about What Are You Like? Few of us have enough time for meaningful travel, but seven days can serve you up a healthy slice of Ireland, and while it is just a tasting, the music, merriment, and memories will linger far longer.  Whoever coined the Irish proverb, “When God made time, he made plenty of it,” must have been blessed with immortality, or unlimited vacations. The rest of us measure our lives … [Read more...] about A Little Bit of Heaven

Slainte | Oats: The Original Comfort Food

Call me crazy, but oatmeal cookies have never had a spot on my favorite foods list. They’re too sweet. I prefer my oats prepared in such a way that I can really taste the full nutty flavor. I even enjoy eating them by the dusty flaky mouth-gumming uncooked handful. That taste quirk may be a result of genetic memory. My father’s father, his father, and many of the other male … [Read more...] about Slainte | Oats: The Original Comfort Food

October 24, 1945

The United Nations was born in Washington, D.C. on this day in 1945. During a short ceremony, representatives from a total of 29 nations ratified the UN charter which declared that nations work together to uphold human rights and work together to overcome social, economic, humanitarian and political challenges. Formed in the wake of World War II, Ireland was at first denied access to the UN on the grounds that the country took a neutral stance during the war and did not aid the Allied forces. Ireland was accepted into the UN ten years later, in 1955. Although Ireland did not join NATO, they became an active nation, contributing Irish Defence Forces to UN peace-keeping missions in Congo, Cyprus, Lebanon and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
