The president has long been an advocate of the work of missionaries, calling … [Read more...] about A Tribute to Misean Cara, Ireland's "Original Pioneers"

The U.S. women’s national soccer team won the World Cup in July, beating Japan in a near-blowout 5-2 victory. But it was a goal in the semifinal game against the top-seeded German team that made Irish American Kelley O’Hara a household name. Nine minutes after O’Hara, 26, was subbed in, just minutes before the end of regulation time, she scored the definitive goal of the game, … [Read more...] about Kelley O’Hara's World Cup

An inside look at the stadium that has been at the heart of Irish sporting events for over 100 years.  I can’t keep up with Leonard Fearon. He walks as fast as he talks and he’s got a few thousand mouths to feed. So while young hurlers from Waterford and Kilkenny chase each other around Croke Park six floors below, I’m on the corporate level running after the chef. Fans may … [Read more...] about Behind the Scenes at Dublin’s Croke Park

In rural Virginia, where poverty is a constant and medical care is a rarity, a team of nurses has provided mobile healthcare for 35 years. Today, the Health Wagon provides more than $1 million worth of medical care to more than 11,000 uninsured or underinsured patients who would otherwise have no access to the services they need. October 25, 1818

On this day in 1818, Irish Opera singer Catherine Hayes was born in Limerick. Hayes had a house cleaning position at Lord Limerick’s house. There Dr. Knox, Bishop of Limerick for the Church of Ireland, overheard her singing. He launched her career and arranged her education. She went on to study in Paris and Milan for five years. Hayes made her debut at the Italian Opera in Marseilles in May of 1845. She became one of the most sought after opera singers in Europe. She returned to Ireland during the Great Famine and gave a performance of Bellini’s “La sonnambula” in Limerick at the Theater Royal. Catherine Hayes also gained much success after touring America. She was the great great aunt to Irish American actress and singer Helen Hayes.
