An Irish saying has it that “A dinner is not a dinner at all but only an excuse for one if it does not contain a plate of meat.” It’s a good bet that America’s penchant for “meat and potatoes” was cultivated by the immigrants who flocked here from Ireland, where meals built around meat have a long history. Tracing the tradition requires journeying back to the days of the High … [Read more...] about Slainte! The Meat and Potatoes of Life

It was a damp morning in late February 2008 when the phone rang. Harvard scholar and PBS host Henry Louis “Skip” Gates, Jr. was calling with one of his random genealogical requests. Margaret Brown, or “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” survivor of the Titanic died in New York City on this day in 1932. Born Margaret Tobin in Missouri, she relocated to Colorado at the age of 18. She met J.J. Brown, also the child of Irish immigrants. The two married and acquired great wealth after J.J.’s engineering efforts helped Ibex Mining Company in the production of ore. Their new found wealth allowed Margaret to become an activist. She ran for US Senate in 1909 and again in 1914. She was dubbed “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” for her heroic efforts to save passengers. She forced Lifeboat 6 to go back and search for more survivors, taking an oar to row.
