Denis Mulcahy
Project Children
For the past twenty years, Denis Mulcahy has been brightening the lives of Catholic and Protestant children from Northern Ireland, taking them out of the troubled war zone for the vacation of a lifetime with an American family.
When Mulcahy started Project Children in 1976, six Irish children straggled off the plane. By 1995, almost 10,000 children realized the joys of a peaceful existence. Project Children has an annual budget of $700,000 to realize Mulcahy’s credo that it “change one child at a time.”
Mulcahy, who is a detective with the New York Police Department, and a long-time member of its bomb squad, was nominated for a Nobel Prize for his remarkable work.
