GARDAÍ have appealed for witnesses to come forward after a driver died in a collision in Cork city. The single vehicle incident happened at the Sarsfield Roundabout in Wilton at around 1.50pm yesterday afternoon. Irish state buys 100 acres of land to expand Glen of the Downs beauty spot

THE Irish Government has purchased 100 acres of land next to the Glen of the Downs beauty spot in Co. Wicklow. The site is one of Ireland’s few remaining ancient oak woodlands and ranks fifth in the country in terms of its condition. THE Irish Government has increased surveillance at farms across the country after an outbreak of bluetongue was confirmed in Northern Ireland. Bluetongue found in herd of cows in Northern Ireland

MORE than 40 suspected cases of bluetongue have been found in cows at a farm in Co. Down. Two cases were recently recorded at the farm in Bangor but now testing carried out by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has revealed the disease may be present in a further 44 cattle at the site. Oliver Cromwell was made Lord Protector of Ireland on this date in 1653. Following the English Civil War, his victory in overthrowing the Stuart monarchy and the execution of King James I, English Parliament declared Cromwell “Lord Protector” in England’s first attempt at a state ruled government. He held this position for five years (1653-58) of the eleven years in which England remained a republican Commonwealth government. Cromwell had a detrimental effect on Ireland in these years. He led an invasion of Ireland from 1649-1650. The public practice of Catholicism was banned and all Catholic owned land was confiscated.
