The Affleck family just can’t seem to get enough of Irish American novelist Dennis Lehane. Hollywood’s latest Batman, Ben Affleck, is going to get back in touch with his more gritty side (The Town, Good Will Hunting) by bringing one of Lehane’s Joe Coughlin novels to the big screen as a director. Entitled Live by Night, the book is the second in a trilogy of books set in the … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood:

1. The idea has only been floating for a few weeks and not a word of a script has been written. But already, the Whitey Bulger movie soon to be made by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck is getting mixed reviews. Bulger, of course, is the long-time Irish Godfather of South Boston who had been on the run for nearly two decades. He was finally nabbed in California over the summer. Since … [Read more...] about Irish Eye on Hollywood: Upcoming Film Releases

The dynamic Irish actor talks about his latest role in The Guard, working with the brothers McDonagh and his upcoming directorial debut with Flann O’Brien’s At Swim Two Birds. It’s a Thursday morning in late June, and I am sitting at a table in the empty ballroom of the opulent Beverly Wilshire hotel, waiting for Brendan Gleeson. The press conference scheduled prior to our … [Read more...] about Brendan Gleeson: The Good, the Bad and the Funny

March 5, 1998

Irish drug baron and gangster George “The Penguin” Mitchell was arrested in Amsterdam on this day in 1998, after being caught stealing five million pounds worth of computer parts. A native of Ballyfermot in Dublin, he became involved with associates of the murdered gangland boss Martin “The General” Cahill, and participated in a number of their robberies. He moved from Dublin to Amsterdam in 1996, after the arrest of his right-hand man, Johnny Doran. Rumors surfaced that he had fled the country after being placed on an IRA death list, though this claim was later refuted–his flight attributed to the close attention he was receiving from the Garda.
