Cian O'Connor jumped for gold at the equestrian events in Athens to send the Irish tricolor aloft for the first time in the Olympic Games. Sonia's Silver Ireland brought home only one Olympic medal from the Sydney Games. The country's hopes for gold were dashed when runner Sonia O'Sullivan narrowly lost the woman's 5,000 meter race. The third Catholic Relief Act came into effect on this day in 1782. This act follows the second which was issued on May 4, 1782. Combined, the two Relief acts allow Catholics to own land outside of parliamentary boundaries, allow Catholics to become teachers, and allow them to act as guardians. These acts are part of the movement for Catholic emancipation and the removal of restrictions brought about by the Penal laws.
