The Kelly Cares Foundation’s annual Irish Eyes Gala, took place at the Sheraton Times Square on the evening following the Breezy Point ribbon-cutting, and honored the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, NBC News’s Chief of  Environmental Affairs Anne Thompson, and Peter Schivarelli, Manager of the band Chicago. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame’s famed football coach, was honored by the Kelly Gang at Michael’s Restaurant in New York City on March 13. Earlier that day he visited Breezy Point, where he witnessed the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy and met some of the people who were badly affected by the storm. William Trevor, short story-writer and novelist, was born in Co. Cork. Trevor, who has won the Whitbread Prize three times and has been short-listed five times for the Booker Prize, is considered one of Ireland’s greatest writers. In a rare interview with Irish America magazine in 1992 Trevor said, “I think we Irish are a nation of storytellers. If you study the way we argue, you find we sometimes do so by telling a story. We make points by telling stories. They tell far more stories in the Dail than they do in the British House of Commons. I can never explain why stories are natural in Ireland, but they are, and sometimes it’s better to leave it at that, and just say the are.”
