Francis Gribbon is a lieutenant in the Fire Department who has served for the last three years as deputy commissioner for public information. Gribbon, a 12-year veteran of the department, was managing the public information operations at the command post on West Street when the towers collapsed. He was given the mammoth task of providing the world press corps with information on the FDNY’s losses in general and on individual firefighters. He was later assisted in this massive undertaking by four former press officers for the Fire Department, who came back voluntarily to help, along with several other volunteers. Gribbon coordinated the biographical information on every firefighter and worked with newspapers, including the New York Times, to put a face to the name of every individual who was lost. ♦
