“It’s the holiday season…” So sings Andy Williams - as have many other crooners - in the classic Christmas song “Happy Holidays.” For many Irish Americans, that “holiday season” means it’s time for our annual trip to Macy’s in New York City where, in 1947, Irish Hollywood legend Maureen O’Hara portrayed a busy holiday parade planner, in the beloved Yuletide flick Miracle on … [Read more...] about Christmas Movies

Storm Barra hits Ireland As Covid restrictions increase across Europe, residents of the Emerald Isle found themselves staying at home for an entirely different reason. Storm Barra battered the UK and Ireland earlier this week, leaving 59,000 Irish homes without power. Originally hitting the south-west, Barra moved upwards, and the north-west of Ireland, as well as Scotland, … [Read more...] about News Roundup

Truth be told, it was the sheep who saved our summer vacation. My teenage daughters were just barely tolerating the 4,000-mile, out-and-back road trip from Chicago to Yellowstone and Glacier national parks. Their patience was slim. A year and a half home with me and their mom, separated from friends thanks to that nasty virus, had ratcheted their teen angst several notches … [Read more...] about Got a Case of Teen Travel Angst? It's been an eventful news week for the Irish at home and abroad. As the Emerald Isle is venturing into yet another lockdown, Irish Americans have been dominating the political headlines here in the United States. November 4, 1980

On this day in 1980, Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter in a landslide election. Reagan was born in Illinois on February 6, 1911. His father, Jack Reagan, was the grandson to Irish Catholic immigrants from Co. Tipperary. Reagan became successful in Hollywood, appearing in famous roles like George Gipp (earning him the lifelong nickname “The Gipper”) in “Knute Rockne, All American” (1940.) Many considered 1924’s “King’s Row” his best film. Reagan went on to serve in the military. He became governor of California in 1967. He made his bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 1976, but was defeated by Gerald Ford. He served two terms as the 40th President of the United States from 1981 to 1989. His terms were marked by such terms as “Reaganomics.”
