If, in 1964, you were to have asked me which two things excited me most, aside of course from ‘The Siren Call of Sex’ as the poet Philip Larkin put it, I would have answered, the Ronettes and the paintings of Francis Bacon. Oh, and the fact that I was leaving Hull College of Art intent on a life of painting, so three things. The first Francis Bacon paintings I saw were in … [Read more...] about The Human Cry: An Appreciation of Francis Bacon

Just when I think I have my dad all figured out, a new snippet of info comes to light, and June always finds me thinking more about him than usual. It’s Father’s Day month, his birthday was the 3rd, and my parents were married on June 16th, now celebrated globally as Bloomsday, the day Leopold Bloom wandered through Dublin in Ulysses by James Joyce, Dad’s favorite author. June … [Read more...] about Sláinte!: Irish Wedding Traditions

The name can be traced throughout Ireland, but is more frequently found in the south around Cork and Waterford and in the north in Counties Roscommon, Leitrim and Cavan. The modern forms of the name are derived from Mac Donnchadha, which originates from the first name Donnchadh, a compound of  "donn" meaning brown, plus "cath,"  a battle. Often translated as "brown one," Donnchadh was a common first name in ancient times. Given its … [Read more...] about The Marvelous McDonaghs

April 19, 1956

On this day in 1956, Irish-American actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco and became Princess Grace of Monaco. The two met while Kelly was filming Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief in the French Riviera. As Princess of Monaco, Kelly retired from acting and founded AMADE Mondiale, a Monaco-based non-profit organization eventually recognized by the UN as a Non-Governmental Organization. Prince Rainier and Princess Grace had three children: Caroline Louise Marguerite – Princess of Hanover and now heiress presumptive to the throne of Monaco, Albert II – Prince of Monaco current ruler of the Principality of Monaco, and Princess Stéphanie Marie Elisabeth.
