Irish America Archives

Library books adorn the top of the Irish America Archives page.

THE BRIDGET H. MURRAY LIBRARY

The Irish America Library stands as a loving tribute to Bridget “Bridie” Murray: An Ordinary Woman Who Lived an Extraordinary Life. In 1938, at the tender age of 13, Bridie née Collier embarked on a solo journey from Corofin, County Galway, to New York. Throughout her lifetime, Bridie achieved numerous feats, yet her most remarkable accomplishment was nurturing a family of nine children, 13 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Bridie’s profound life lessons, rooted in her own rich experiences, continue to resonate through the generations, ensuring her legacy endures.

Through the years: Galway in 1935: Bridie, 11, with her much-loved and much-traveled bicycle. ● In New York in 1942:  Bridie at 18. ● September 9, 2016: A radiant Bridie on her 92nd birthday.
