In the 1890's, Sarah Bernhart did a one-act play in San Quentin Prison's lower yard. That was it for showbiz until Waiting for Godot arrived in 1957, via the San Francisco Actors' Workshop. The captive audience included Rick Cluchey, who'd "never been in a theater, not even to rob one." Many acts later, he became the first non-Italian actor ever to win the Italian Drama … [Read more...] about Rick Cluchey: San Quentin and Samuel Beckett

Bob FitzGerald knows he's Irish after all, with a name like FitzGerald who wouldn't. He's heard, too, that FitzGerald is an important name in Ireland. But, until recently, his Irish roots weren't of much interest to him. His ties were to the mountains, lakes and rivers of Montana where he had been raised and now lives. So, why is he suddenly interested in finding his Irish … [Read more...] about An Irish Homecoming

America has always been an important focal point for Irish nationalists. Without the moral and financial support of those exiled from their native land, no new political movement could ever hope to succeed. From the long-past Fenian times right up to the present day, representatives of an infinite variety of political groups in Ireland have travelled the length and breadth of … [Read more...] about Maud Gonne: Irish Women and America

Six years after she lost her job for raising questions about the validity of her superior's scientific research data, Dr. Margot O'Toole, a Dublin-born biological researcher living in Boston, has been vindicated in spectacular fashion. Once shunned as a supposed troublemaker, she is now being hailed as a hero. One of Ireland’s most famous playwrights and novelists, Oscar Wilde was born on this day in Dublin in 1854. Wilde was born to a wealthy family. His father was an eminent Dublin surgeon and his mother was a talented poet, where Wilde likely inherited his passion for writing from. He attended Trinity College Dublin and then went on to study at Magdalen College Oxford. His works, like the play “The Importance of Being Earnest” and novel “The Picture of Dorian Grey” are riddled with wit and aestheticism.
