“If You Can’t Stand Up – Stand Out”

By Irish America Staff

March 1991

It is a Manhattan Irish bar late at night. Chris O'Donoghue of WWOR Channel 9 wheels into the bar with a group of friends. Heads swivel, as one of the best-known faces in the New York area passes. He knows it is only a matter of time. And it is. A large man, the map of Ireland on his face, comes lumbering down the bar. "Chrisss," he slurs, assuming familiarity with the face he … [Read more...] about “If You Can’t Stand Up – Stand Out”

The gentle rolling hills that surround his ranch in Goshen, New York, about 60 miles north of Manhattan, remind Paul O'Dwyer of Ireland, and that's good enough reason for him to live there. He spends almost every weekend at the ranch. The New York Commissioner to the United Nations, now in his mid-eighties, catches the bus from Manhattan, then walks the almost three miles to … [Read more...] about Hall of Fame | The Lion in Winter

Charleston’s Hibernian Hall

Charleston, South Carolina: At first I saw what I anticipated-streets of beautiful eighteenth-and nineteenth-century homes and public buildings lovingly restored. True, Hurricane Hugo had struck. But the people had fought back. Injured buildings were shedding their scaffolding to stand proud again. Memories of both the Revolutionary and Civil wars abounded. We saw Saint … [Read more...] about Charleston’s Hibernian Hall

On December 3, 1990 Mary Robinson was inaugurated as the first woman ever to be elected President of Ireland. That in itself, was a history-making event in a country where politics have been almost exclusively confined to the "Boys' Club." The world took note. A major British newspaper named her Woman of the Year and there were no fewer than 2,000 media requests for interviews. … [Read more...] about Mary Robinson: President for All the People

One of Ireland’s most famous playwrights and novelists, Oscar Wilde was born on this day in Dublin in 1854. Wilde was born to a wealthy family. His father was an eminent Dublin surgeon and his mother was a talented poet, where Wilde likely inherited his passion for writing from. He attended Trinity College Dublin and then went on to study at Magdalen College Oxford. His works, like the play “The Importance of Being Earnest” and novel “The Picture of Dorian Grey” are riddled with wit and aestheticism.
